The Akita is a powerful and striking member of the Working Group. Originating in Japan, the breed was developed to hunt large game such as boars and bears in the mountains. Known for its strength, loyalty, and protective nature, the Akita hol revered place in Japanese culture as a symbol of devotion and good fortune.
Breed Appearance
The Akita is a large, powerful breed with a broad, bear-like head, erect triangular ears, and small, deeply set eyes that give it a dignified and alert expression. Its thick double coat, which comes in white, brindle, and pinto, adds to its striking appearance. One of the breed’s most distinctive features is its large, curled tail, carried high over the back. With a strong, heavy-boned build, the Akita has an imposing yet noble presence.
• Height: 24–28 inches
• Weight: 70–130 lbs
Breed Temperament
Akitas are dignified, independent, and deeply loyal & affectionate to their families. They form strong bonds with their owners but can be reserved and territorial around strangers and other animals. Their protective nature makes them excellent guardians, but they require firm training and early socialization to manage their strong-willed temperament. Due to their size, strength, and dominance, Akitas are best suited for experienced owners and may not be ideal for homes with young children or other pets.
Breed Grooming
Akitas have a thick double coat that requires regular maintenance. Weekly brushing helps manage shedding, but during seasonal changes, when they “blow” their undercoat, daily brushing is needed to control loose hair. While they do not require frequent baths, occasional bathing every few months helps keep their coat clean without stripping natural oils. Routine nail trimming and dental care are also essential for their overall health.
• Heavy shedding: Sheds year-round, with intense seasonal shedding twice a year.
• Brushing: Weekly brushing, increasing to daily during shedding seasons.
• Bathing: Occasional baths every few months to maintain coat health.
• Nail & dental care: Regular nail trims and teeth brushing are recommended.
Special Notes
Akitas have a strong prey drive and can be aggressive toward other animals. They are best suited for experienced owners who can provide firm leadership.
