The Brussels Griffon originated in Belgium in the 1800s, bred from small terrier-type dogs to hunt rats in stables. Over time, they were refined with Pug and King Charles Spaniel bloodlines, creating the affectionate companion dog known today.
Breed Appearance
A small breed with a sturdy, square build and a distinctive pushed-in face. They have expressive eyes, a short nose, and a beard-like muzzle. Their coat can be rough or smooth and comes in red, black, black and tan, or belge (a mix of black and reddish-brown).
•Height: 7–10 inches
•Weight: 8–12 lbs
Breed Temperament
Loyal, affectionate, and highly intelligent, Brussels Griffons form strong bonds with their owners. They are social and thrive on attention but can be wary of strangers. They are playful but can also be stubborn, requiring consistent training.
Breed Grooming
Rough-coated Brussels Griffons require weekly brushing and occasional hand-stripping to maintain their coat. Smooth-coated varieties need only occasional brushing. Both types shed minimally and need regular ear, nail, and dental care.
Hypoallergenic: No, but they shed minimally.
Special Notes
Prone to separation anxiety, Brussels Griffons prefer constant companionship. Their short muzzle makes them sensitive to extreme heat.
