Breed History

The Pomeranian was originated in Germany by the Spitz bloodlines hundreds of years ago. This breed was mainly kept by royalty as life long companions, no different from today with thousands of families across the USA. This breed excels with preforming tricks, watchdog, and competitive obedience

Breed Appearance

The Pomeranian is a small breed dog with males and females measuring 7-12 inches in height and weighing 3-7 pounds in weight. Please note that males and females may be smaller or larger than show standards and still be purebred. This small breed has a tiny wedge shaped head, forming into a long muzzle with a scissor bite. Their two almond shaped eyes are medium in size and available in a light hazel to black in color. Their two ears are triangular in shape and stand firm on the top of their head. The Pomeranian has four long, skinny legs that hold up their rectangular body and thick coat. Their tail is medium in length and falls up and over onto their back, covered with hair. Their medium to long coat is available in all colors and color combinations.

Breed Temperament

The Pomeranian is a dog best suited for those who have dog experience and are able to remain pack leader at all times. This small breed is good with children and other pets that he or she is able to grow up around. This breed is loyal, brave, loving and known for not becoming overly attached to their owner. This breed naturally wants to bark more than others, which is why we recommend early obedience and socialization classes to ensure a well mannered dog. The Pomeranian can do well within an apartment as long as they receive enough daily physical and mental exercise. This breed thrives on learning new tricks and rules to obey daily. Positive reinforcement training methods are the only training methods we recommend.

Breed Grooming

This breed does shed. This breed requires daily brushing, bathing when needed and regular trips to a professional groomer for hair trimmings.

Special Notes

Please note that this breed isn’t meant for everyone, and truly requires an experienced dog owner who can provide proper leadership and daily needs for their Pomeranian. A properly fenced in yard or properly fitting leash and harness are required for this breed while outdoors at all times. Please fully educate yourself about the Pomeranian prior to adding one to your home to ensure you are able to make a life long commitment both physically and financially for your new family member. This breed is prone to skin issues, allergies, eye problems, heart issues and are known for being picky eaters. All dogs originate from wolves (Canis Lupus). Each breed of dog was originally created by mixing different breeds together in an effort to bring forth certain characteristics. Once a breeder has created acceptable “breed characteristics” within their bloodline and these “breed characteristics” have shown to be reliably reproduced in the offspring for three (3) generations, the bloodline may be upgraded from the category of “foundation stock” to “pure-bred”. The same “pure-bred” breed standards vary from different continents, countries, territories, regions, breed clubs, and canine pure-breed registries depending on the goals of their breeders.

Dog DNA testing companies can have accurate results for a specific bloodline of a small colony of dogs. However, there are tens of thousands of different bloodlines in the world which have not yet been tested for marker baseline results by Dog DNA testing companies as of 2024. For this reason Dog DNA testing companies do not guarantee the 100% accuracy of their breed lineage results and will also show different marker results for the same pure-bred breed in different continents, countries, territories, regions, breed clubs, and canine pure-breed registries depending on the goals of their breeders.
